July Book Review - And Then There Were None

After my much enjoyed research into the world of mystery murders I am thrilled to announce that our July novel will be And Then There Were None, written by Agatha Christie.

This goose bump-raising story begins with eight strangers (all hiding from their own nefarious histories), being lured to the mysterious Indian Island for a relaxing weekend. However, once there, they begin to realize that their invitations to meet the secretive host U. N. Owen might all be a façade when a murder is committed and they find themselves stranded on the island, trapped with the unknown killer… and their own guilty consciences! One by one, the guests are being killed, with nothing but the poem, “Ten Little Indians,” to help them solve the mystery.

The writer of And Then There Were None, Agatha Christie, was a remarkable English crime novelist who was so influential to the genre of mystery she earned the world renowned title of the “Queen of Crime.” During her career, Christie published over 80 detective novels and was celebrated worldwide for her success with West End theatre plays, one of which is still running after more than 23,000 performances. She has been referred to as the best-selling writer of books of all time, and only the Bible is known to have outsold her collective sales of roughly four billion copies of novels. Agatha Christie is the quintessence of a fiction novelist. Her writing is an indisputable contribution to the world of books and I am so excited to delve into her fantastic story of suspense and murder in this month’s book club.

A success!

Our first meeting was, in my opinion a definite success! Admittedly, we only spent 15 minutes discussing the actual book The Sugar Queen, before delving into other enjoyed novels and authors, however it was great getting to know one another. The food was delicious and the company fantastic. Although, I'll admit defeat... my chocolate cake may have been a little too rich for some (a specific reference for Hope who could only get down one bite, haha). My only regret was being so engaged by new friends and food I completely forgot to take pictures to commemorate our first meeting. I promise next month I will remember!

I'm ecstatic for our July meeting which will be held on Thursday the 8th at 6:30. After a vote from each member we have decided to pick a mystery/thriller novel. I still have a little research to do however I'm positive that July's book will be "hair raisingly" good! Keep an eye out over the next couple of days for an update and we hope to see you there!

The Sugar Queen

June Book Review - The Sugar Queen

Exciting news everyone! Our first meeting will be held Thursday, June 10th at 6:30pm (I will post the address of our meeting place as we get closer to the date). The book we will be reviewing is The Sugar Queen, written by Sarah Addison Allen. This book will take us into the colorful world of Southern Belles, love, betrayal, and temptation… all tinged with an inexplicable magic. If you haven’t already guessed the main dishes at our meeting will be delectable pies, luscious cakes, and mouth-watering tarts surrounded by a rainbow of candy! I am extremely excited to read and review this book with you. Sarah Addison Allen is an amazing writer who has a way of snaring her readers’ attentions within the first paragraph. I read her New York Times Bestseller Garden Spells, and was awed by her ability to smoothly combine the world of magic with the world of reality all while keeping her characters on a very identifiable level. It was fantastic! I’m thrilled to see what she has in store for us in The Sugar Queen.

Welcome to Read, Eat, & Repeat!

Hello fellow book readers,

As this is my opening post I will just start off with explaining what Read, Eat, and Repeat book club’s purpose is. First off we welcome all members who love to read, whether you prefer fiction, biographies, historical novels, romance novels, mystery, or sci-fi. We are open to all genres and all opinions! My goal is to pick books from different genres for each month in hopes of widening my field of literature, so-to-speak. Also I love to hear different takes people have on a book, because although we may be reading the same words our unique perception of the story is what in my opinion makes books so amazing.

Now that we have briefly touched on the reading portion of the club, let’s turn to its second purpose and that is to eat! Each meeting we will have a collection of food based on our monthly book. Sometimes the meal may be based loosely around the time period of the story or it may be a meal directly from the story line. Either way it will be worth the read!

I would like to hold each book discussion on the second Thursday of each month. Although this may on occasion vary due to holidays or vacations, I really want to give our members something to look forward to each month. For those readers with children, let me first just congratulate you for your devotion to the love of books. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to finish a book when you have a toddler pulling on the pages! We would like our monthly meetings to be a relaxing time for you and so if you choose to get a sitter or leave your baby with your spouse so you can have a night to yourself that’s great. However for those who, like me are single parents or just can’t find someone’s schedule to work with the meetings please feel free to bring your kids with you. Our meeting place is extremely baby proofed and full of toys and Disney movies for the masses!

I will update our blog each month with the meeting time, place, and book.
